We were delighted to hear that Sophie, granddaughter of Against Breast Cancer’s founders Anthony and Patricia Leathem, recently held a cake sale to raise money for breast cancer research. Here she tells us about her reasons for supporting and how the day went:
I’m Sophie Stickney aged 14 and a student at Parkstone Grammar School. On Saturday July 16th I organized a cake sale and, thanks to all the wonderful people in Swanage, raised £275.10 for the charity Against Breast Cancer and their research at the University of Southampton into secondary spread breast cancer.
I decided to help Against Breast Cancer, the charity my grandparents started in 1993, by organizing a cake stall which I know can be such fun. With considerable help from others making cakes, we sold plates of 6 cakes for £2.50 to big cakes for £5. So many people were generous and good humoured, offering a £5 note and refusing change, though one told us it was his Dad’s birthday and he’d like a large cake; when told it was £5 he said “I’m not spending £5 on my Father!” and left. Some people also explained their personal reasons for supporting.
Anyway, a fun and a worthwhile afternoon! I should like those kind supporters to know the money goes to a group at the University of Southampton who worked on an AIDS vaccine and are applying those lessons seeking a vaccine for breast cancer.
