We are delighted to share the amazing fundraising efforts of Karen Hockey, the 2023 Lady Captain at Nuneaton Golf Club, who raised a staggering £5,235.27 throughout 2023 to support Against Breast Cancer.
Karen began her fundraising journey by organising the Annual Ladies Christmas Lunch with a gold, white and silver theme based on the nutcracker soldiers she purchased, and she was delighted when many of the ladies wanted to buy these to start the fundraising.
Karen very kindly chose Against Breast Cancer to raise money as it was a cause close to her heart. “My mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and went on to have a mastectomy as that was the only option open to her,” she explains.
“Not too long afterwards a dear friend of mine was also diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She has been clear for 5 years and now has regular mammograms. She was one of the lucky ones as they found it early. A positive attitude, she believes helps and does not feel beaten by anything. Her advice is not to hide it, as her friends and work colleagues got her through. Never give up!”

Karen arranged many events throughout the year including raffles, dinners, and golf days. The culmination of her fundraising was the annual Lady Captain Charity Fundraising Day which took place in September. The day began with a shotgun start – everyone teed off at the same time from different tees hoping they all finished at the same time, followed by a sit-down meal. “An enjoyable day was had by all despite the rain,” Karen said.
The final event to be held was the Annual Dinner Dance in November. They held a raffle, played heads “n” tails, and auctioned off a 4 Ball at The Belfry – Brabazon Course, which was kindly donated by one of the members.
