Triathlons are a fantastic way to challenge yourself physically while making a meaningful impact on breast cancer research. Whether you’re a seasoned triathlete or a first-timer looking to push your limits, this FAQ page answers common questions about preparing for, participating in, and fundraising for charity triathlons.
What is a triathlon?
A triathlon is a multi-discipline sport completed in sequence involving swimming, cycling, and running. The distance can vary at different events. At the Olympics, there is a 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run, but charity triathlon events may have different distances or offer a variety of distances.
Who can participate in triathlons?
In most events, anyone aged 18 and over can participate. There are events that cater for all fitness levels, from beginners to experienced triathletes. You can enter on your own or take part with friends, either participating together or as a part of a relay team.
Are triathlons fun?
Taking part in a triathlon can be fun, especially if you’re fully prepared for the distances you’re taking part in. However, even seasoned triathletes will tell you it isn’t always fun. Instead, they get satisfaction from the competitiveness of taking part and knowing they are doing good to their body.
Are triathlons good for you?
Training for and taking in a triathlon can be hugely beneficial to your health. Our research shows that regular exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer occurrence and recurrence. You are advised to train sensibly and not to push yourself beyond your boundaries – a training plan can help you pace your preparations.
What are the best triathlons to do?
The London T100 Triathlon very popular, iconic route especially on the bike ride which passes landmarks including Big Ben, the London Eye and Tower Bridge, with a variety of distances. The Blenheim Palace Triathlon, held on the grounds of the birthplace of Winston Churchill, is also one of the most highly-rated triathlons in the world, especially because of its easy waters and flat terrain.
What are the best triathlons for beginners?
Beginners are advised to start with a sprint distance. The Blenheim Palace Triathlon is one of the most beginner-friendly events and includes a sprint event made up of 750m swim, 19.8km bike ride and 5.4km run. The Super Sprint at the London T100 Triathlon consists of a 400m swim, 10k bike ride and 2.5k run. These events, and others, also offer a team sprint option, where a team of two or three split the legs between themselves. This is great if there is a discipline you feel isn’t as strong as the others.
Is there a triathlon near me?
There are a huge number of triathlons that take place across the country, and indeed the world, each year. Use a site like Find a Race or British Triathlon and use the filter options to find something in your area.
Can I do a triathlon for Against Breast Cancer?
Yes. We have places in events such as the London T100 Triathlon and Blenheim Palace Triathlon. However, if you choose to get your own place in another event, you can still fundraise for us. Let us know by emailing events@againstbreastcancer.org.uk or by setting up a Just Giving page. The money you raise will go towards vital breast cancer research, with supporters like you already helping to fund major developments such as miONCO, a potential early cancer detection test for 12 types of cancer, including breast cancer.
How do I register for an event?
For events we have places in, you can fill out the application form online and we will be in touch. For other events, visit the event website and complete their application form, then get in touch with us at events@againstbreastcancer.org.uk to inform us that you are fundraising for ABC.
What is the registration fee?
The registration fee depends on the event you are doing. Please visit the specific event page or website for the cost of each event.
Is there a minimum fundraising amount?
If you have a charity place with ABC, there is a minimum fundraising total. The specific target will be shown on the event page or as part of the application process. If you acquire your own place in the event, you can raise whatever you can.
How do I fundraise for a triathlon?
Once you have signed up for your event, you should set up your own online giving page. We recommend using Just Giving. Click on the link and it will automatically set your page up with Against Breast Cancer. You just need to enter the details of your event and your details. You can also raise funds offline. What support is provided for training?
We can offer resources including training plans and expert tips from the experienced triathletes in our fundraising team. We can also link you up with other participants so you can support each other through the race and your preparations.
