A huge well done to everyone involved in organising the first Abingdon Vale Cricket Club Pink Saturday. The club encouraged players, families and spectators to get involved whilst enjoying a variety of cricket related festivities, raising over £700 for breast cancer research.
Choosing to turn their club pink for a week in June, Abingdon Vale joined cricket clubs from Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Hampshire, for many of whom Pink Saturday is becoming something of a tradition. Vale are the first Oxfordshire club to embrace our Pink Saturday campaign after it’s inception in the Wiltshire County Cricket League. Not content with one day of fundraising, the club spread their activities out over a whole week to include a quiz night, a pink evening for the juniors and a mid-week game as well as their Pink Saturday league fixture.
The week climaxed with a women’s softball competition held on the Sunday when more than 40 women took part; many of whom were completely new to the game.
It was an ideal chance to embrace women’s sport in the town, whilst also highlighting a tremendous cause. It was a great occasion, which everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
Paul White, Abingdon Vale CC chairman
We are extremely proud Abingdon Vale Cricket Club will continue to support Against Breast Cancer for the next 3 years, the club membership even decided to include the Against Breast Cancer logo on their playing shirts!
The women’s softball tournament was attended by Laura Crofts, Oxfordshire Cricket Board’s women and girls development officer, who further echoed the benefits of Pink Saturday;
It’s great to see Abingdon Vale working together with their community to raise funds for such a good cause. The short, sharp format of Softball Cricket is perfect for women of all abilities. Hopefully, this is something that can now become a permanent fixture at the club and we can continue to grow.
Our Pink Saturday campaign came was created from a desire to not only raise funds but also to make cricket and sport in general more enjoyable and accessible for all. The support of Abingdon Vale is vital for us in spreading the message of Pink Saturday far and wide.
