On Sunday May 5th Against Breast Cancer hosted the very first Breast Walk Ever Berkshire. The sponsored walk took local fundraisers along the Thames Path between Bisham and Reading on what proved to be a beautiful spring day.
Hundreds of walkers took up the challenge, raising thousands of pounds for research into secondary spread, the main cause of breast cancer related deaths.
Each of the walkers had the option of participating in either the full marathon, half-marathon or 10km walk with all routes finishing at Beale Park Wildlife Park & Gardens near Pangbourne.
Massages all round!
Collection buses took the walkers, many of whom bought their dogs along for the day to their various starting points where final preparations took place before heading off. Feed stations en route – together with a small army of volunteer marshals ensured everyone arrived safely back at Beale Park where emotional scenes ensued. Crowds of friends and family cheered and clapped everyone over the finishing line before the walkers collected their hard earned medals and enjoyed a complimentary massage – a welcome treat which was enjoyed by many weary bones!
We have been overwhelmed with positive feedback and messages of support following Berkshire’s first Breast Walk Ever, so much so that plans are already in place to make the walk bigger and better in 2020!
The success of the event was due in no small part to the dedication of the volunteers who gave their time and the generosity of local supermarkets who all donated produce to keep our walkers well fed and on the right track, a massive thank you to everyone involved.
