The post-box outside the Old Post Office in Wallingford recently received a makeover to raise awareness of Abingdon based charity Against Breast Cancer who are holding their annual ‘Breast Walk Ever’ in the town on Sunday 4 September.
Affectionately known as yarn bombing, the topper features large a pink breast cancer ribbon and was created from wool donated to the charity by Sutton Courtenay-based Bryony Landsbert. A long-time supporter of the charity Bryony said:
“Just over a year ago, one of my very best friends was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I heard about the Breast Walk Ever and I signed up to do the marathon walk straight away! Unfortunately the walk was cancelled due to Covid, So I’m doing it this year instead and my Labrador will be joining me for as much of it as he can manage!”
Almost exactly a year later, and another of Bryony’s friends has been diagnosed with breast cancer which is the most common form of cancer in the UK.
A self-confessed crochet addict Bryony leapt at the chance to help promote the walk.
“This is the biggest piece of crochet I’ve ever done, and I have enjoyed every single hour and 18,000 stitches that have gone into it – even though pink isn’t really my colour!
“I think the post box topper is in a great location. I got caught measuring up, and was asked twice what I was going to make by excited passers-by (I didn’t let on). There were a few people smiling and taking pictures when I was putting it on too, so I think it’s safe to say that we’re making people smile whilst promoting the Breast Walk Ever – Perfect.”
The Breast Walk Ever takes place on the 4th of September offering distances a Full 26.2 Mile Marathon, a Half Marathon or a 10KM. The route is fully marshalled with support stations. All walkers will receive a medal at the finish line.
The charity is asking all walkers to try to raise £80 sponsorship, all proceeds will go to Against Breast Cancer who fund breast cancer research taking place in Oxford and Southampton.
