Congratulations to everyone who braved the soaring temperatures and took part running the hottest London Marathon on record this year.
24 runners braved the heat of over 27 degrees Celsius to take on the distance for Against Breast Cancer. Despite the soaring mercury and a shortage of water in the latter stages each of our runners safely navigated the 26.2 scorching miles through the concrete streets of the nations capital city.
It’s always such a thrill to see each runner pass our cheering point with smiles on their faces. The hot conditions were not enough to drain the enthusiasm even through the last few gruelling miles. At the finish, tears were shed, and hugs were shared with the gathered friends and family.
Some had enough strength to join us in our recovery area in St James’ park where our loyal massage therapist Richard was able to start to rub away those inevitable aches and pains. Several of the team stayed with us after to cool down and share stories and experiences from the course. One runner – Maciek went to the aid of a fellow runner around mile 19 who ended up needing medical attention. In the true spirit of marathon running it was great to hear of the camaraderie between the participants.
It was so hot, your time stops being important, and people were going down everywhere!
We were so very humbled by the gratitude of our runners. These brilliant people put in hours of training through the dark winter mornings only to be faced this year by one of the hottest April days that Britain has ever seen to run the marathon – and all they could do at the end is thank us for the opportunity!
We want to thank each one of our runners for putting themselves through the monumental effort of both training for and participating in the London Marathon. Together they have raised well over £50,000 for breast cancer research and are all truly inspirational.
We’re now recruiting for our 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon team, if you would like to run in support of research into secondary breast cancer, find out how to apply for one of our guaranteed entry places here.
