Charity Runs
Sign up for your charity runTaking part in a charity run is one of the most popular ways to fundraise and at Against Breast Cancer we have runners involved in some of the biggest runs in both the UK and overseas.
There are runs for people of all abilities and often all you need to get started are a good pair of running shoes (or trainers). Running is also good for your health, both physical and mental.
Our research has shown that regular exercise can help reduce the risk of developing secondary breast cancer. In fact, almost 30% of breast cancer cases in the UK are preventable through lifestyle changes. It can also help you to lose weight and benefit your mental health.
Charity running events
Against Breast Cancer’s most popular running event is undoubtedly the TCS London Marathon, although places are limited each year. We also have places in a number of popular overseas marathons, including the Berlin Marathon and Paris Marathon.
If you can’t quite face a full marathon, a half marathon may be for you. The Big Half, Royal Parks Half and London Landmarks Half Marathon are great alternatives to the London Marathon, or take your place on the starting line for the increasingly popular Hackney Half.
Alternatively, you can take in other iconic British cities whilst you run the Bath Half Marathon or Oxford Half Marathon or take part in the UK’s biggest half marathon, the Great North Run.
However we have places for you in a variety of other marathons, half marathons and 10ks, including the Berlin Marathon and the ASICS London 10k.
For something less challenging and more fun, you might be interested in Inflatable 5k, whilst there are also ultra runs for a real challenge, such as Race to the King and Race to the Stones. But you are not limited to these events. You can also run for us in hundreds of other organised races – just let us know if you have a place and we’ll give you the same level of support.

Frequently asked questions
What types of run are there?
The most common runs are marathons (26 miles / 40 km), half marathons (13 miles / 20 km) and 10 ks, but there are also shorter, and longer, runs. Most major events are on closed roads or trails, but there are also obstacle and assault courses as well more extreme runs over longer distances and tougher terrain.
Are there any charity runs near me?
There are runs all across the country, so you are bound to find something near you. If you can’t find something on our website, take a look at Let’s Do This for events you can get your own place in.
How much does a charity run cost?
It depends on the event. Our charity places in several half marathons cost as little as £15 (not including sponsorship), however more prestigious events with higher demand, such as the London Marathon, can cost more. Don’t forget the hidden costs as well, such as new clothing and shoes and getting to the event on the day.
How do I train for a charity run?
It is very important you train for a run so you are fit enough to complete the event without injuring yourself. It is best to start your training runs early, beginning slow and short and gradually building up the pace and distance. Don’t forget to taper off ahead of you run so you are in peak condition for the day, although a short run the day before can help you loosen up for the big day. We provide our runners with appropriate advice on everything from training plans, nutrition and hydration advice to maintaining your motivation and what to wear.
What do I need for a charity run?
For the run itself, you will need suitable clothing and shoes, and it’s best to try out exactly what you will be wearing on one of your final training runs you break in anything to and to make sure you’re comfortable. It is a good idea to bring refreshments to have before and after the race as well, but you won’t need this for the run as the organisers will have everything you will need to give to you at support stops along the route.
What are the best shoes for charity runs?
Searching on Google is a great way to see what the experts are saying about the latest shoes, with Runner’s World and T3 offering in depth looks at a variety of new shoes. There are many factors to consider when choosing, such as weight, comfort and price, so often the ‘best’ show may not be the best for you.
Can I take part in the London Marathon for Against Breast Cancer?
Yes. We have a limited number of London Marathon charity places available, however due to high demand we cannot guarantee a place. Alternatively, if you are lucky enough to have your won place, you can choose to run for us – just let us know you’re taking part and we’ll give you the same level of support as our charity place runners.
